The porn stopped.
The concealing didn’t.
What is still running in the client you’d call a success — and the question that finds it in about four minutes.
Written to be read in one sitting between clients, not saved for a weekend that never comes.

Who this is for
The case that stalled with a client you’d otherwise call a success
The pornography is genuinely gone and you are right to believe him. He turns up. He does the between-session work. By every measure you were trained to use this is a good outcome.
And his partner will not settle, cannot say what is wrong, and you have started to wonder whether you are missing something — because nothing in the standard frameworks explains it. They assume a behaviour, and the behaviour has stopped.
This guide is about the layer nobody measured. It will not tell you what is happening in your case. It will tell you where to look.
The twelve pages
What the guide covers
01 The client who looks like a good outcome
What he has not told you, in concrete terms: the reels, the class at ten past six, the route through the supermarket, the ranking, the comparing. None of it appears on any measure the two of you agreed to track.
02 What actually migrated
The same sequence, relocated. Why the reward sits before anything happens rather than after, why there is nothing to find, and why it moves in one direction over time.
03 Five layers
A way of listening: what lives at each layer, what it sounds like in the room, and what happens if you only work above it.
04 Three questions for your next session
Not a protocol, and they do not yield a finding. The first one takes four minutes and tends to change at least one formulation.
05 What she has been reading
Why she cannot produce an incident, what to do with her read, and the three ways I have watched this go wrong — including in my own work.
What this establishes, and what it does not
There are no indicator lists in this guide, no checklist and no scoring. That is deliberate. A framework that produces a finding about a person who has not consented to being assessed is a different and much more dangerous object than a way of listening.
Nothing here establishes what occurred in any individual case. Your clinical judgement, your client’s own account, and your own regulator’s scope govern that. If anything here conflicts with any of the three, go with yours.
What this is, and what it isn’t.
This is professional education. It is not supervision, not consultation on a particular case, and not clinical or legal advice. Reading it doesn’t create a professional relationship between us. I’m a Registered Social Worker; identifying conditions and applying diagnostic labels is outside my scope and it is not what this teaches. You remain governed by your own regulator, your own scope, and your own judgement.
If you or someone you’re working with is in immediate danger, call 911. In Canada, the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline is available 24/7 — call or text 9-8-8.
