I Quit Porn and Nothing in My Marriage Changed
Sep 10, 2026
About these entries. Nina and Tom are composites. They are not clients, they are not people, and they are not a couple โ they are two constructed voices, built from a pattern I've seen often in twenty years of practice, written so it can be recognised from the inside. Nothing here is drawn from any individual's life, and no detail belongs to anyone.
Eight weeks.
I know the number the way you know your own phone number. I could tell you it at three in the morning. Eight weeks, and I told her on Sunday, and she said okay, and then she asked me about the recycling.
The recycling.
I've been angry since. Not at myself โ at her. I know how that reads. I'm not going to write it down dishonestly. I gave her the biggest thing I have ever given anybody and she put it down like a bill that had already been paid.
I had it worked out, how I was going to say it. I'd been over it in the car a few times. I had it so it wouldn't sound like I wanted a medal. Then I said it and it sounded like I wanted a medal, and she went very still and very polite, and then she asked about the recycling, and I went and did the recycling.
Here's the thing nobody seems to want to hear. It was never only the porn. It was never mainly the porn.
Before she found anything, before there was anything to find, my day looked exactly like it looks now. It looked like this when I was twenty. There was a woman in line at the gas station on Thursday. Dark coat, hair up. I looked at her four or five times before I got to the front and I've thought about her since โ driving, in the shower, waiting for the coffee this morning.
That's not a confession. That's just Thursday.
There's a woman at the desk on the second floor. There's one who goes past the house running, and I know roughly when, which I suppose sounds like something, except I'm in the kitchen at that time anyway. There's one at the coffee place who does a thing with the cups.
None of it has ever come to anything. None of it ever will. I have never once tried to make it.
That's my whole point. Nothing happens. Nothing has ever happened. I have never sent a message, never taken a number, never been anywhere I couldn't tell her I'd been.
So what is it, exactly, that I'm supposed to have stopped?
I stopped the porn. That was the thing. That's what she found, that's what I said I'd stop, and I stopped, and I've stayed stopped, and I would honestly like somebody to tell me what else there is โ because from where I'm standing I did the thing and nothing came back.
Everyone looks. Men are visual. That's not me being clever, that's just true, and I've never met a guy who doesn't. I'm on my phone the same as I ever was, but so is everybody โ the reels are the reels, that's what the app puts in front of you, you don't pick them, they arrive.
If that's the problem then every man I know has it, and that can't be right.
She asked me on Wednesday how I was doing with it.
I said fine. I said it's fine, it's honestly not hard any more, which is true. Then she asked whether I ever still think about it and I said not really, and we left it there and put something on.
Not really. That was the word I went with. I've thought about it since and I'd probably use the same one again, because the true answer would have taken an hour and there's nothing at the end of it for her. She'd have got upset over something that isn't happening.
Anyway. Eight weeks, and I can't tell you a single thing about my life that's different except that I'm not doing one thing I used to do late at night.
She's downstairs. I should go down.
The one from the gas station had a belt on her coat.
Behaviour โ the layer everyone measures
He stopped the only part of this that had a name. Pornography was nameable, so it was what got found, what got confessed, and what got stopped โ and he is right that he stopped it. That is real, it was necessary, and it is first.
The looking he describes is generally not a glance.
The first look does tend to outrun a man; that part is closest to a reflex. What follows usually isn't. He goes back โ often four or five times across a minute or two โ and each return tends to take a little more than the last: the shape, then a detail, then the beginnings of a scene that is not really about her at all. It builds rather than resetting. Which means that by the second look he knows, and each look after that is a decision, made repeatedly, and not one of them registers to him as a decision at all.
That is how a man can say I only glanced without lying, and how the person beside him can watch him do it and be told she is imagining things.
None of it stopped, because none of it was ever named, and nobody has ever asked him a question about it โ including him.
What he means by nothing happened is that nothing left a trace. Quite a lot happened, continuously, in the one place his partner can feel and cannot see.
Notice also what he does on the Wednesday. She asks him a direct question, and he answers it with a word he has chosen โ not really โ and then explains to himself why the fuller answer would have been unkind to her. That decision took a few seconds and he does not experience it as a decision. Stopping a behaviour does not touch that. It is the same private editing that kept the behaviour possible, still running, now applied to what she is allowed to know about his recovery.
And there is a reason the number he handed her was not worth anything. He is counting the absence of something she never had access to in the first place. What she has always been able to read is the part he has not stopped and does not yet consider a part of it.
She is not withholding a reward. She is reading the layer he did not touch.
Recovery that only reaches the first layer isn't recovery. It's quiet.
On the other site, the other voice, the same ground: He Stopped Watching Porn. So Why Hasn't Anything Changed? โ a woman who got the thing she asked for and found her days unchanged.
If you want the shape of the whole thing: the free guide, You Stopped. So Why Hasn't Anything Changed?, sets out the layers, and what tends to be left running when the first one is dealt with.
One thing to do with this
Not a programme. One thing.
Try a week where the number isn't the point. It will still be there afterwards if you want it.
Then notice what you reach for instead, how often, and what was going on in the ten minutes before you reached.
You don't have to do anything about what you find. Only look at it.
What this is, and what it isn't. This is education, not therapy, and not an assessment of you. Nothing here is a diagnosis โ I'm a social worker and psychotherapist, and diagnosis isn't mine to give.
