The Pull Didn't Go Away When the Behaviour Did
Oct 06, 2026
About these entries. Nina and Tom are composites. They are not clients, they are not people, and they are not a couple โ they are two constructed voices, built from a pattern I've seen often in twenty years of practice, written so it can be recognised from the inside. Nothing here is drawn from any individual's life, and no detail belongs to anyone.
We had a bad one on Thursday.
Not a fight. We don't really fight. It was one of those where she says something reasonable and I answer it reasonably and somehow twenty minutes later I'm in the kitchen with my hands on the counter and she's gone up.
And about twenty minutes after that I was on my phone.
I wasn't doing anything. I want to be clear about that, because I know how the sentence looks sitting there on its own. I wasn't doing the thing. I haven't done the thing.
I was just on it. I was on it for forty minutes and I couldn't tell you a single thing I looked at.
This is the part I'm annoyed about, honestly.
I was told: stop the porn. Right. Stopped. And I thought that was the wanting. I thought that was what the wanting was. Stop it and it stops. That was the deal as I understood it, and nobody told me any different.
Nobody sat me down and said, by the way, there's a second thing and it's going to still be here afterwards and it's going to turn up on Thursdays.
So when it kept turning up I read it the only way there was to read it, which was that I hadn't really stopped, or that stopping doesn't work, or that I'm just made like this and always was.
I've told nobody that. Not her, obviously. Not anybody.
It's worse when I'm bored. That's the one that gets me. Everyone talks about stress and I do get it when things are bad, but the flat stuff is what really does it. A Sunday afternoon with nothing in it. A waiting room. Driving somewhere I've driven a thousand times.
There's a feeling in those and I don't have a word for it. It isn't sadness. And then I'm on my phone, and I don't remember getting there.
The one who goes past the house running turned up in my head twice on Thursday and I hadn't seen her since the week before.
That's not me doing something. That's just what's in there.
Here's my actual complaint, and I'll write it plainly because nobody's reading this.
I did what was asked. I did the hard part, the part with a name, the part she found and the part she wanted gone, and I did it properly and I've kept it up.
And I am, as far as I can tell, exactly the same man in exactly the same kitchen on exactly the same Thursday.
I don't know what else there was supposed to be. Nobody has ever told me there was anything else. And I'm getting fairly tired of being looked at like a man who hasn't finished.
Attention โ and what it is for
He is measuring what he did against what he was told to do, and finding the account settled. The person upstairs is not measuring against that at all. What she has been living beside is the part he has not stopped โ and by his own description it is running in the same kitchen on the same Thursday, exactly as it always did.
That is the whole of it, and everything below is why.
He is right that nobody told him, and that failure is real. The reaching is a separate layer from the behaviour, and it is rarely explained to anyone who stops the behaviour โ so when it survives, the readings available to him are it didn't work, I'm not trying hard enough, or this is who I am. All three end in the same place, which is telling nobody.
Being unexplained is not the same as being unaccountable. What it means is that stopping removed one supplier, and nothing else.
A pattern like this is usually trained somewhere with unlimited supply and instant refresh. Remove that and it does not switch off โ it goes looking for another source, and an ordinary day is a perfectly adequate substitute. Faces instead of images. Imagination filling in what the screen used to provide. Forty minutes on a phone he cannot afterwards account for.
The shape survives the change of material completely intact.
And the shape is the point, because this was never mainly about wanting a woman. Notice what he says about boredom: that the flat afternoons do it more reliably than the hard days, and that he arrives at his phone without remembering the decision to pick it up. That is not desire. It is the fastest way he has of getting out of an uncomfortable internal state, and it was doing that job long before anyone stopped anything.
Which is why the stopping did not touch it. He removed a behaviour and left the job it was doing entirely unaddressed. Something still has to do that job on a Thursday night, and until something else does, he will keep arriving somewhere he does not remember choosing to go.

One thing to do with this
Not a programme. One thing.
The next time it arrives, don't do anything about it. Don't fight it, don't congratulate yourself, don't count it.
Name the state it arrived after.
Bored. Flat. Ashamed. Twenty minutes past a conversation that went badly.
One word, then get on with your evening. Do that for two weeks and you'll have something you've never had, which is a list of what it is actually for.
What this is, and what it isn't. This is education, not therapy, and not an assessment of you. Nothing here is a diagnosis โ I'm a social worker and psychotherapist, and diagnosis isn't mine to give.
